Vienna, IL (April 6, 2024) – The annual Tour de Tunnel returned to Vienna, Illinois, offering cyclists a unique opportunity to explore the region’s history and natural beauty along the Tunnel Hill Trail. This year’s event, hosted by Revive Vienna, drew riders of all ages and abilities who were eager to take on one of three challenging courses: a 10-mile, 20-mile, or a demanding 52-mile route.
The highlight of the ride was the historic Tunnel Hill State Trail tunnel. This 500-foot-long, dimly lit passageway provided a thrilling and unique experience for participants. The tunnel, once used by trains, offered a glimpse into the region’s industrial past.
Beyond the tunnel, riders enjoyed the scenic beauty of Southern Illinois, winding through lush forests, rolling hills, and picturesque countryside. The event also featured food trucks, live music, and a family-friendly atmosphere, making it a great day out for the whole community.
The Tour de Tunnel is more than just a bike ride; it’s a celebration of local history and a chance to support the revitalization of Vienna. By participating in this event, cyclists contribute to the community while enjoying a memorable ride.
We attended the 2024 event and had a great time. A gravel bike would probably be the best option, but using a hybrid seemed to work just fine. It’s a very peaceful ride through the countryside that is very enjoyable.
